MEDIUM:1 drawing : black ink over pencil, with black crayon, and opaque white on off-white grained drawing 45.5 x 64.1 cm. (sheet) CREATED/PUBLISHED:1936 Apr. [publication date] CREATOR: Clark, George R., artist. NOTES: Title devised. The published caption reads: After the Volstead Act went into effect there was a sudden revival of interest in the rudiments of chemistry, and eight-gallon crocks and Canada Dry bottles became valuable. On the market were ''Kick Tablets'' for beer--if the directions called for one tablet the average amateur brewmaster put in three. Brewing was a race against time and the more impetuous drinkers bought near beer and spiked it with raw alcohol. The discussion of beer recipes became polite dinner conversation and the above Bedlam was typical in many an otherwise conservative community. Brewing was a particularly popular sport in college towns, where the odor of active mash often hung heavily over Fraternity Row. It was about this time that Sinclair Lewis wrote Babbitt, King Tut''s tomb was discovered, Linger Awhile was supplanting Rose of the Rio Grand and marathon dances were a novelty.
